Research suggests the following:

(G.Stux, B.Pomeranz 1987)

Energy points are located at sites richly supplied by nerves and blood vessels.

Treatment here often restores balance to the autonomic nervous system, harmonizing sympathetic and parasympathetic functions.

Stimulating points can release endorphins (opioids) and neurotransmitters (such as serotonin and melatonin) in the brain that results in pain modulations and mood enhancement.

Stimulating points can have a therapeutic effect locally as well as distally from the point. This may due to the transmission of neural impulses along nerve pathways to the brain, and from the brain to the organ or area of the body being treated.

Ayurveda, literally translated as the “Science of Life”, is an over 5000 year old system of medicine that has its origin in India. It can be viewed as a combination of holistic medicine, philosophy and spirituality, bringing deep understanding of body, mind and soul. It teaches us how to live in harmony with ourselves, our environment and each other.

One of the practical parts of Ayurveda is the hands-on art, called Marma Chikitsa or Marma Therapy. Like in Acupuncture from TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), this is similar work on the many energetic points we all have throughout the body. Nearly 75 of the 117 principal marma points correspond exactly to the principal acupoints in Chinese medicine.

Ayurveda & Marma points

A Marma point is defined as an anatomical site, and can be defined according to the composition of tissue that makes them up, like: bone, tendon, muscle, nerve or vein. There are 117 classical Marma points throughout the body. Each point has its own intelligence and consciousness which co-ordinate with the mind and body. This ancient form of treatment dates back to 1500 - 1200 BC. It involves using the fingers to stimulate the Marma points, thereby promoting the flow of Prana which leads to physical and mental rehabilitation. As with Acupuncture, these points correspond to internal organs and systems of the body which react to manual stimulation.

Prana is life-force and pervades each and every corner of the body. It nourishes, guides and controls the functioning of the cell and systems. When these marma points (junctions) are affected or ruptured, the organs linked become unnourished due to lack of prana and start to work less and less healthy & efficient.

Through centuries of practice it has been observed that many symptoms are alleviated through Marma massage. To name a few; fear, nervousness, anxiety, anger, attachment, light headedness, tingling in the fingertips and toes, stress, lack of energy, low immune system, weakness in general, low digestive fire, muscular aches & pains including back and neck.

Marma Massage Therapy

Contact with Marma points can significantly calm the mind and reduce stress through their ability to influence the nervous system, of which they are essentially a part. These energy points may also trigger the release of unexpressed or unresolved emotions.

The stimulation of Marma points can be done in 10 different ways. One of the most commonly known is perhaps the Ayurvedic oil massage. A deep connective tissue dry massage or deep pressure without oil is a technique also used in Tui Na, part of Chinese medicine. Puncturing with a needle called Sūchi Bharana, is a similar technique as Acupuncture.

The therapy or treatments at Center for Inner Management are done without the use of oils and needles but combine subtle energetic work with deep pressure and dry massage to stimulate the flow of energy, leading to an overall sense of well-being.
